The Missouri paycheck calculator estimates state withholding from the MO W-4 status category and extra dollars per payment. For 2026 it uses a status-based deduction and progressive withholding bands, with whole-dollar rounding. Kansas City and St. Louis earnings taxes require a separate check.
A fictional $57,780 annual salary paid monthly gives $148 Missouri withholding per payment under the ordinary Single category. Entering $9.50 extra makes the rounded state total $158. This guide explains the controls, that rounding result and the limits of the cash estimate.
Choose the actual MO W-4 category
The Missouri employee certificate groups Single, Married Spouse Works and Married Filing Separate together. It separately identifies Married Spouse Does Not Work and Head of Household. These are withholding choices tied to the certificate, rather than a generic married switch.
The free Missouri paycheck calculator follows those three categories. It does not use a personal-allowance count. Federal W-4 status is entered separately, so check both sections rather than assuming one automatically controls the other.
The 2026 federal payroll implementation bulletin corroborates annual deductions of $16,100 for Single/separate/spouse-works, $32,200 for spouse-does-not-work and $24,150 for Head of Household. Those figures are calculation inputs, not cash deductions from the deposit.
Do not select the larger deduction merely to lower the estimate. Match the facts and actual certificate election. Two working spouses should not assume the one-earner category describes their payroll situation.
Reproduce the $4,815 monthly wage example
Choose 2026, $57,780 annual gross and Monthly, giving 12 equal payments of $4,815. Set the federal category to Single with multiple jobs off and all modern W-4 dollar adjustments at zero.
Select the Missouri category for Single/separate/married-and-spouse-works and enter zero additional withholding. Leave local and other cash amounts blank or zero. The second test changes only Missouri extra withholding to $9.50.
Assume an ordinary employee with one employer for the complete year, residence and services in Missouri, no special exemption and no pre-tax benefit adjustments. The sample uses identical gross, federal, FICA and state wage bases.
This controlled setup makes the state adjustment visible. It does not claim that every Missouri employee has these wages, deductions or household circumstances.
Read the annual calculation before payment rounding
The DOR’s 2026 withholding formula annualizes wages, subtracts the applicable deduction and applies cumulative withholding bands. Our case leaves $57,780 − $16,100 = $41,680 of formula income.
For this interval, use the published $263 accumulated amount plus 4.7% of the excess over $9,436: $263 + (($41,680 − $9,436) × 4.7%) = $1,778.468. It is incorrect to multiply the entire $57,780 salary by 4.7%.
Divide by 12 to get $148.205666… and round to $148 per monthly payment. The annual model therefore sums $1,776 in state deductions. That repeated rounded total need not equal an unrounded annual formula amount.
The published bands are payroll withholding instructions. A final return may contain income, modifications and credits that do not appear in this wage-only example.
Why does entering $9.50 extra produce $158?
The implementation sequence rounds the ordinary payment, adds the additional election and rounds again. Here it becomes $148 + $9.50 = $157.50, then $158. Do not compare a rounded final check with an unrounded intermediate expression and assume an error.

| Displayed outcome | No state extra | $9.50 extra input |
|---|---|---|
| State deduction per payment | $148.00 | $158.00 |
| Cash per payment | $3,902.52 | $3,892.52 |
| Yearly state withholding | $1,776.00 | $1,896.00 |
| Yearly estimated cash | $46,830.24 | $46,710.24 |
The recurring cash change is $10 × 12 = $120. Although $9.50 × 12 equals $114, that is not the final difference after this tool’s whole-dollar rounding. An actual employer’s implementation and signed election still need review.
The federal bulletin also describes whole-dollar rounding before and after extra withholding. It provides an independent check on the calculation order used in these live tests.
Reconcile the first annual cash estimate
| Item included in this model | Annual amount |
|---|---|
| Gross salary | $57,780.00 |
| Federal withholding | $4,753.56 |
| Missouri withholding | $1,776.00 |
| Employee Social Security | $3,582.36 |
| Employee Medicare | $837.84 |
| Cash before omitted items | $46,830.24 |
Monthly cash is $4,815 − $396.13 federal − $148 state − $298.53 Social Security − $69.82 Medicare = $3,902.52. Twelve such payments reconcile to the displayed annual estimate.

Check city earnings taxes outside the state result
Missouri’s alternative-work resources direct Kansas City and St. Louis earnings-tax questions to the cities. A state withholding line is not a combined state-and-city calculation.
For example, the St. Louis earnings-tax department describes a 1% earnings tax covering city residents and nonresidents performing services in the city, subject to the relevant rules. Residence and work facts matter independently of the state deduction category.
The reviewed calculator has no automatic city-rate or workday-allocation control. Its local field accepts an annual cash amount that you establish separately. Leaving it zero, as in our example, is not a legal finding that no city amount applies.
Remote work and mixed locations also warrant state sourcing review. The employer’s address by itself does not answer every resident or nonresident question.
Review certificate features outside the ordinary model
MO W-4 includes reduced withholding on line 3 and exemption claims on line 4. Those are distinct from adding a positive amount to the ordinary formula. The reviewed calculator does not expose those certificate elections; do not simulate them with an unsupported negative extra amount.
A reduced election or exemption requires the actual certificate and appropriate facts. Zero tax in a hypothetical tool run does not establish eligibility. Likewise, a paycheck estimate does not calculate a final return’s federal-tax deduction or other return adjustments.
Known other-cash deductions do not automatically reduce taxable wages. Review the tax treatment of benefits separately. Uneven wages, bonuses, several employers or a partial work year need more than a repeated annual salary.
This free calculation does not file MO W-4, prepare a tax return or verify earnings. Any pay statement must reflect accurate records of actual compensation.
Missouri paycheck calculator questions
Does Missouri use a dependent allowance count here?
No. The reviewed controls use a certificate status category and extra dollars per payment.
Why is a $9.50 election a $10 cash difference in the example?
The payment total is rounded to whole dollars after the extra amount is added.
Are Kansas City and St. Louis taxes included automatically?
No. Determine any applicable city amount separately.
Can the extra field reproduce MO W-4 line 3?
No. A reduced-withholding direction is a different certificate feature absent from the ordinary controls.
